Grades 4-8 Minimalistic but highly informative, this idea book explores the science behind moving parts and small mechanisms involved in building robots from the companion LEGO set of the same name. The book uses a graphic layout that includes very few words beyond the introductioneven its table of contents is in a visual format. Although Isogawa provides no explicit step-by-step directions for constructing models such as a car with a real suspension or a robotic arm, the pages are reminiscent of an instruction manual, with all the necessary parts and tools plainly laid out, along with close-up photographs of the finished models from multiple angles, clear enough that replicating the forms won't be that difficult. Isogawa emphasizes the mechanical side of robotics rather than programming, and readers only need to be familiar with three basic programs to successfully execute most designs. Encouraging young engineers to apply problem solving and creativity to the endless combinations of mechanics, this manual offers a handy companion for a competitive LEGO league, maker space, or just-for-fun activity on a rainy day.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
